The School of Dentistry is excited about Research Day 2025! Check back here for event updates. This event serves as a platform to exhibit research endeavors undertaken by School of Dentistry students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, and staff.

Poster Tips

  • The preferred poster size is 48 in. width x 36 in. height. The poster paper roll is 36 inches across, so one of your poster dimensions needs to be 36 inches.
  • Keep the poster mostly white with some color. Color-heavy posters take longer and more resources to print.
  • PowerPoint, view your poster at 400% magnification. It will give you a better idea of how your graphics will look when printed in the large format.

The School of Dentistry proudly marked another successful Research Day on March 7, 2024, showcasing 58 diverse research projects by students, post-doc fellows, faculty, and staff. Under the leadership of Dr. Hui Wu, Associate Dean for Research, the Office of Research orchestrated the event, supported clinically by Drs. Yifan Zhang, Samyia Chaudry, and Christina Truong. 

This platform provided an invaluable opportunity to spotlight the dental community's research endeavors, with particular emphasis on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as a significant scientific breakthrough. Esteemed keynote speakers, Dr. David Huang and Dr. Alireza Sadr, shared their profound insights into OCT's development and its clinical implications in dentistry. 

Dr. Huang, a pioneer in applying laser and optical technology to eye diseases, highlighted the significance of OCT in ophthalmic imaging. With numerous accolades and over 350 peer-reviewed articles to his name, Dr. Huang's keynote address underscored the transformative potential of OCT technology. 

Dr. Sadr, renowned for his innovations in dental OCT, emphasized its role in noninvasive diagnosis of dental diseases. His research contributions, totaling $3 million, have significantly advanced the field. As an accomplished author and recipient of the Bayne Midcareer Award, Dr. Sadr's presentation highlighted the practical applications of OCT in restorative dentistry.

The School of Dentistry presented another highly successful Research Day on Thursday, March 2, 2023 that showcased 68 research projects by students, post-doc fellows, faculty and staff. Many thanks to the SOD Office of Research led by Dr. Hui Wu, Associate Dean for Research, for their hard work to plan, coordinate, and present the program. Thanks also to the Oregon Dental Association, School of Dentistry Alumni Association, and Permanente Dental Associates for their sponsorship and judging of the research posters and CaseCATs. Thanks to our faculty for moderating and facilitating the event, and thanks to many others for working behind the scenes to print the posters and ensure that the event was a success.

Dr. Ray Cohlmia, Executive Director of the American Dental Association (ADA) and former Dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center presented his vision and strategic plan for the ADA and his inspiring outlook for the profession of dentistry. Dr. Wenyuan Shi, Chief Executive Officer of the Forsyth Institute in Boston, presented an overview of the historic dental contributions of the Forsyth Institute and the many exciting scientific advances that will transform oral health and the delivery of care.

Dr. Wenyuan Shi was the 2023 keynote speaker. He presented “The Emerging Technologies that will Shape the Future of Dentistry.” Dr. Shi is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Forsyth Institute and has led the Forsyth Institute since 2017. He also served as Forsyth’s Chief Scientific Officer until Dr. Ben Wu joined the team in 2023. Before his appointment, Shi was the chairman and professor of Oral Biology at UCLA Schools of Dentistry as well as the Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA School of Medicine for 20+ years. Dr. Shi is the founding scientist, former chief scientific officer and chairman of the scientific advisory board of C3J Therapeutics Inc., which is now called Armata Pharmaceuticals (https://www.armatapharma.com), listed on NYSE. He is co-author and co-inventor of over 250 scientific articles and 40 patents and patent applications.

In 2023, SoD was excited to host a second speaker, Dr. Raymond A. Cohlmia. He is the Executive Director of the American Dental Association, the nation’s leading advocate for oral health. He was in private practice for 26 years prior to becoming full-time faculty at The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, where he served as Dean for seven years prior to his full-time appointment at the ADA. Dr. Cohlmia is a life member of the ADA and served in the ADA House of Delegates as both a delegate and alternate delegate and on several councils and committees of the ADA over his tenure of many years of volunteer service to the ADA. He most recently served from 2015 to 2019 as the Twelfth District Trustee and was elected to the Board of the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute (ADASRI), where he served as their founding chair. He has also served in multiple capacities in the local and state levels, serving as president of both his local component and state associations.

2022 Research Day

SOD held another successful Research Day on March 3, 2022! With 45 live virtual presentations (36 research projects and 9 CaseCATs) from SOD faculty, research staff, and DMD students, as well as the first in-person keynote speech in two years from Dr. Susanne Scherrer, we were pleased that the hybrid event was a success!

Thank you to our 2022 Keynote Speaker, Susanne Scherrer, D.D.S., D.M.D., P.D., Professor, Head of Biomaterials, and Head of Continuing Education at the University Clinics of Dental Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland. She presented, "Why did that bridge fail?
